The Community completes the emergency works to guarantee security in the Castle of Mula (07/03/2018)

The Community has completed the emergency works to guarantee security in the Castillo de los Vélez de Mula.

The protection measures have been carried out with the aim of avoiding possible situations of risk and danger for people and for the good itself, detected after a visit made by technical staff of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment.

Also, these actions, which had a budget of close to 30,000 euros and have already been completed, are joined by those currently being carried out by the City Council of Mula for the shoring and strengthening of the eastern tower of the medieval walls. Albacar de Mula, which will also be financed by Culture with more than 70,000 euros.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán, visited today, along with the General Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, Luis Lafuente, this construction of the sixteenth century declared of Cultural Interest, "for whose rehabilitation will soon be a new and important step, since at this time, and thanks to the collaboration and dialogue maintained between the regional government and the Mula City Council, the Master Plan is being drafted which will mark the actions to be carried out and for whose execution there are already budgeted, by Culture, 100,000 euros more for this 2018 ", as recalled Celdrán.

The Master Plan, in which fifteen specialists from different disciplines participate, will be the road map that will include the different actions planned for the recovery and enhancement of the monument, taking into account the legal obligations derived from security, accessibility and the planning

Thus, the needs and priorities will be defined so that the different technical projects can be elaborated that will give way to the respective phases of rehabilitation.

The head of Culture said that "from the regional government, with its president, Fernando López Miras, at the head, we remain firm commitment to the recovery of our heritage and the town of Mula so that its castle, one of the emblematic buildings of our Region, it becomes a cultural and tourist claim of the first order and recovers little by little its splendor, being able to be visited in a future that is closer and closer ".


The works carried out by Culture already completed consisted, first of all, in the revision and repair of the current enclosure, placing indicative signs that warn of the prohibition of passage, also closing, with galvanized metal fence, the western zone behind the wall.

A temporary protection railing was placed in the entrance area and lift bridge and the consolidation of mud walls in the entrance area was made, as well as the protection of holes in floors, with galvanized metal grid, and the adaptation of the staircase and railing of the upper patio.

With respect to the Homage Tower, the adaptation and protection of the southwest corner was carried out, dismantling the non-original elements that entailed danger of detachment and also carrying out the reconstruction of a vault in one of the rooms and other complementary measures such as the withdrawal of vegetation.

The protection of an internal staircase, the closing of windows and the consolidation and reinforcement of a section of the wall with risk of detachment completed the proceedings.

At present, work is also underway on the underpinning and strengthening of the eastern tower of the medieval ramparts of the albacar (the lower enclosure of the defensive complex muleño, to the south of the alcazaba where the castle is located).

In order to tackle the overhang, the support terrain is being improved by means of the execution of a heel that stabilizes the sliding profile, proceeding afterwards to the masonry underpinning for which the original construction system will be followed (the staging of masonry walls).
