The Minister of Culture visit the archaeological site of the Roman town of Los Villaricos (30/07/2014)

25 students from different Spanish and foreign universities, coordinated by the University of Murcia, have worked on the excavation

The Minister of Education, Culture and Universities, Pedro Antonio Sánchez, accompanied by the Mayor of Mula, José Iborra, and the general director of Cultural Property, Maria Comas, today visited the archaeological site of the Roman town of Los Villaricos.

In this new excavation campaign, organized by the City of Mula, Murcia University and Cajamurcia Foundation, involving a total of 25 students from different Spanish and foreign universities have been directed and coordinated by Rafael González Fernández and Francisco Matallana Fernández, University of Murcia, Antonio Zapata and Jose Parra, municipal archaeologist of the City of Mula.

The campaign this year has also helped to train students in archeology, as it has organized a 'Course Introduction to Field Archaeology' in collaboration with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Late Antiquity.

The Minister of Culture said that "from the Ministry would like to thank all participants in this project, both teachers and students and City Council for their effort, dedication and enthusiasm in their work, thanks to which we can add value to a part of our history we talk about ourselves, our past, and therefore, of vital importance for the whole of our society. "

This site has found a great 'torcularium' (mill) to produce oil that has been identified as the largest documented Roman Hispania.

Its dimensions are 39 meters long by 17 wide, with a total of 663 square meters, which have been found so far three ships dedicated to the pressing of the olives, with five presses beam, the area of ​​operation of the presses with five ballast and slop oil zone, with six pools and jars.

Preceding them, have documented two new rooms, the grinding zone, two large moles olearias and the 'tabulatum' or reception area of ​​the olive.

The discovery of this new productive area shows high production and marketing of oil which the town was engaged in the III-IV centuries AD

Given the importance of these excavations have supposed, the Minister of Culture concluded that "from the Ministry want, we must, and is within our top priorities, preserve these sites, as further enrich our cultural heritage and we build a bridge to our past which will help us to know ourselves better. "
