Elimination of four copies of pinus halepensis at the entrance to the Hermitage of the Child (26/02/2020)

The Department of the Environment, together with the Forest Agents Brigade of the General Directorate of the Natural Environment, will eliminate four adult specimens of pinus halepensis (carrasco pine) in the pine grove on the entrance road to the Hermitage of El Niño de Mule.

After the inspection visit carried out by municipal technicians and Forest Agents, it was found that there are four pines affected by the pest of the Tomicus beetle (popularly known as a pine driller).

Under its bark you can see galleries in an advanced state and numerous entry holes in their trunks.

The four specimens, which are together in the same area, are completely dry with the risk of collapsing dehydrated wood tissues and fractures in the branches of greater weight.

Both municipal technicians and environmental agents recommend that the remains of the 4 dry pines be cut and removed as soon as possible to prevent the Tomicus from spreading to the rest of the pine forest that is about 75 years old and has great environmental, cultural and cultural value. religious.

For its part, the General Directorate of the Natural Environment will install pheromone traps in the immediate vicinity to try to control the population of this Tomicus focus, acting in a localized way since fumigation is not indicated in the fight against this beetle.

The Department of Environment of the City of Mula came working with the Brotherhood of the Child for two years in the eradication of this focus, when another 2 dry pines affected by the insect were already eliminated.

The Councilor for the Environment, Paco Llamazares, has indicated that other complementary measures are being studied in order to protect the pine forest of the Hermitage, such as the replacement of new pines in the area where dry specimens are being cut and provide the area with a system that allows distress irrigation during the summer months.

He has also added that the three monumental cypresses of 150 years of age that are next to the Hermitage, are not in danger;

because Tomicus does not affect this variety of conifers.
