Found in a cave in the village of Yéchar MULENA new schematic rock art paintings (19/02/2016)

The Minister of Culture and the regional government spokesman, Noelia Arroyo, and the mayor of Mula, Juan Jesus Moreno, today reported the discovery of schematic rock art paintings in a cavity of the 'Cueva Fair' in Yéchar (Mula ).

According to experts, the paintings could date from the Neolithic period, which were made about 6,000 years ago.

The discovery was made at the end of January, several members of the Society Historiológicos and ethnographic studies, would also attended the presentation.

Noelia Arroyo stressed that "in an area as prospected such as the Region of Murcia, the discovery of new paintings is exceptional."

In addition, schematic paintings have more detail than usual, as the representation of arms and legs in the figurations made based on triangles, which help experts to better reveal its meaning.

Being prehistoric rock art, paintings acquired automatically declared of Cultural Interest.

Also, the Minister of Culture said that "we are working to be attached to the list of schematic and Levantine cave paintings, declared World Heritage Site by Unesco, which form the so-called Rock Art of the Mediterranean."

During the presentation, Noelia Arroyo stressed "the great historical and cultural importance of this new finding, which contributes to increased large representation of cave paintings that are home to more than a hundred caves and shelters scattered throughout the region."

He added that "it is a legacy that we have the duty to preserve for future generations, and to the maintenance, dissemination and enhancement work from the regional government in collaboration with local councils".

The Minister of Culture also affected "the great work of documentation, preservation and dissemination by all experts of the region in this field".

Details of the paintings

The new paintings were found on 30 January by several experts who had traveled to the mountain range known as 'Cejo Cortado' in Yéchar to access a cavity could contain paintings.

The team was formed by archaeologist Teresa Fernandez, coach Peter Lucas, illustrator and muleńo archeology student Raúl Campuzano and members of the Speleological Federation of Murcia, Juan Vicente Querol and Benegas.

During his expedition to the cave, which is inaccessible by foot, they saw paintings in three distinct areas.

In the main panel stand-oculadas few anthropomorphic figures composed of a kind of hybrid between double triangular anthropomorphic representations oculadas and located on either side of the head of FIG.

These figures are superimposed other ramiformes red lines (the form of branches).

Also, under these representations a series of zigzag lines fingerings and also in the same panel are distinguished, albeit in a deteriorated condition, there are traces of a similar figure as well as other black strokes and unrecognizable abstractions.

In addition to this star panel, two panels are observed in worse condition.

In one of them can be distinguished zigzag strokes and other forms to be determined, while in the other, at the back of the coat, a figure oculada looms with shorter strokes.

This iconography, who have studied different authors, appears associated with archaeological items from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.

In this regard, the region has been previously documented a type of wall painting schematically in Figure oculada Cave Vines in Cieza.

The difficulty of access to the cave does not allow establish a project for the site can be visited, however, it is possible to develop tours for small groups within the call caving tourism, which is a new form of leisure sports in developing .
